Engineering Director, 3 months + contract. Flexible/remote working

We are recruiting an Engineering Director on a contract basis for our EdTech client to lead a team of about 50 people (Software Engineers/Technical Architects/Infrastructure Engineers and Test Engineers) bringing the team together productively. You will need demonstrable experience of similar roles working in an Agile environment and with a background in engineer/Software Development with some specific experience of Ruby on Rails applications.
The role
• Lead on implementing and reviewing effective processes for the engineering team, including sprint planning and retrospectives
• Lead on monitoring and incident management processes for the business and provide input on information security.
• Participate as a member of the executive team in establishing effective governance processes to ensure that objectives are achieved, risks are managed appropriately and the company’s resources are used responsibly.
• Act as a role model of leadership behaviours and values to instil confidence within the business, ensuring that the company’s product strategy is positively portrayed.
• Prepare reports and input to leadership and other stakeholders on engineering matters as required.
• Lead the engineering team (consisting of Software Engineers, technical architects, Infrastructure Engineers, and Test Engineers s), ensuring that realistic timescales are produced for deliverables and these are met on time and budget.
• Work with the Product Director and product team to ensure that deliverables meet customer need.
• Support customer activity where a deeper level of confidence or technical knowledge is required, both during presale and with existing customer.
• Provide technical oversight, with the ability to undertake code reviews and assist other members of the team with resolving programming and algorithmic issues.
• Proactively unblock the engineering team by considering potential problems and facilitating communication with other teams within the business.

Experience required:
• Experience of leading a distributed development team in an agile fashion.
• Commercial experience working with Ruby on Rails applications.
• At least 2 years of experience in using infrastructure-as-code (e.g. Terraform).
• At least 2 years of using distributed source control management.
• Understanding of the deployment, scaling and security of cloud services.
• Experience of deploying physical hardware.
• Experience in using Microsoft Azure or AWS cloud services.
• Experience of managing CI/test infrastructure and services.
• Experience in scripting and automation.

Day rate: £600 to £625 per day
Contract length: 3 months +.
